Web Application Testing Cheat Sheet

This is a handy reference, but it is good to keep in mind that no book, or article about security is ever exaustive or conclusive. It is a good starting point, but you can not assume that it covers every possible security problem your web application could encounter.

MUX - Free Online Video Transcoder

MUX is an any-to-any video conversion service, that just happens to be powered by Amazon's EC2 and S3.

To use MUX, you provide a direct link to your uploaded video (e.g., Windows Media video or AVI file) and MUX gives you a Quicktime MOV, MP4, or Flash Video (FLV) in your specified size, bitrate, and frames per second. Put in an FLV and it gives you a WMV, and so on.

You can also use MUX Mobile to have video converted and sent to your mobile phone in 3GP format.

Mux takes almost any uploaded video (wmv, mp4, flv, mov, etc) or even a link to your YouTube page, and converts it online to a video format of your choice.

Accordingly, it is best suited only if you want to convert some video file saved on a remote webserver, or sites like youtube. Otherwise, if the file is on your computer, you can use any other software, so as to save time uploading and downloading the file.

Right now, MUX is still in "proof of concept" stage, but it looks promising.

"You can scan your system for Windows Vista compatibility by using CNET's Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor. Each of your computer's components is evaluated against CNET's own recommended Vista requirements, and suggestions are provided on how to update or upgrade each component that does not meet CNET's recommended specs for Vista.

Windows Vista Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the Speech Recognition feature of Windows Vista was recently reported. An issue has been identified publicly where an attacker could use the speech recognition capability of Windows Vista to cause the system to take undesired actions.

Technically speaking the vulnerability does exist. However, in order for the attack to be successful, two conditions should be satisfied

1) The targeted system would need to have the speech recognition feature previously activated and configured.
2) Additionally the system would need to have speakers and a microphone installed and turned on.

The exploit scenario would be something like the Speech Recognition System recognizing the commands passed on through the microphone, such as "shutdown", "restart", "delete". As Joe Wilcox has mentioned, it could cause a serious harm if u are chatting with someone through your microphone and speakers and then all of a sudden u need to attend the door bell. It might happen that the person sitting on the other side issues some command and your microphone picks it up.

The only barrier that would make an attack difficult would be the speaker and microphone placement, microphone feedback, and the clarity of the dictation.

All said and done, one might be wondering why this vulnerability is only applicable to Windows Vista and not the previous versions. As stated in this post on Microsoft's Security Response Center Weblog"
"Windows Vista’s sophisticated speech recognition allows for easier operation and extended support for commands. This has been largely used to help facilitate computing use especially for users that are affected by dexterity difficulties or impairments."

10 Tips For Successful Public Speaking

*
Know the room. Be familiar with the place in which you will speak. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
*
Know the audience. Greet some of the audience as they arrive. It's easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.
*
Know your material. If you're not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. Practice your speech and revise it if necessary.
*
Relax. Ease tension by doing exercises.
*
Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. When you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful.
*
Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining. They don't want you to fail.
*
Don't apologize. If you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audience's attention to something they hadn't noticed. Keep silent.
*
Concentrate on the message -- not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties, and outwardly toward your message and your audience. Your nervousness will dissipate.
*
Turn nervousness into positive energy. Harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm.
*
Gain experience. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need.

Intel V8 System - Eight Core PC

Intel has showcased private demos of an eight-core PC system at CES 2007. The system is known as Intel V8 System, consisting of two Xeon quad-core processors built onto an Intel workstation motherboard, the system offers eight cores inside a large, WATX chassis.

So I feel like the competition is heating up between Intel and AMD. AMD was first to offer a "quad-core" system, the 4x4 or QuadFX, made up of two dual-core AMD Athlon 64 X2 chips mounted on a motherboard, one dual-core chip per socket.

Although for now, Intel isn't suggesting that V8 will be a common system for desktop systems.

IE7 To Flag Verified 'Safe' Sites

Well beginning this year, January onwards Microsoft Corporations Internet Explorer 7 browser will start flagging certain e-commerce and banking sites as green for "safe." It is said that this could help customers recognize safe sites for browsing.

How will it recognize "safe" sites?

  • The browser will first look for an extended-validation certificate issued by any number of vendors.
  • To qualify, vendors such as VeriSign Inc. and Comodo will be required to make extensive checks before approving such certificates.
  • If required they also will have to undergo independent auditing through WebTrust, a service run by trade groups for certified public accountants.
  • For some verifications, exemptions are permitted with a letter from a lawyer, notary or accountant.
  • The guidelines include procedures for verifying authenticity.
  • Businesses in existence for less than three years may be required to also produce evidence they have a valid bank account.
  • Additional checks are required for banks and other companies deemed to be high-risk targets for scams.

Will Win XP be available on New PC's after Vista Launch?

Well this has been a great concern for many Win XP user's. Well it is said that Microsoft will make available Windows XP for from 12 to 24 months after Vista's general availability, depending on the sales channel i.e user demands. So if users demand it can last for sometime more.

According to Microsoft's Life-Cycle Policy Web site, Windows XP Home,Professional, Tablet PC, Media Center and 64-bit editions will be available in direct OEM and retail licenses for 12 months following the beginning of Windows Vista's general availability, which is scheduled to be January 30, 2007. System builder licenses will be available for another 12--or total 24--months from Vista's general availability.

However, chances are more that Microsoft will get Windows XP off from retail shops as soon as Vista is started shipping. But will have to wait and see, what their marketing strategy is?

HeyWatch! Online Encoding of Video

HeyWatch.com is an online encoding platform, where you can enjoy video encoding in the format you need. It supports so many formats like Mobile MP4, Sony PSP, iPod Video etc. However the problem it might face is the time taken to upload the files to the server and the processing power required to encode video files.

Hey!Watch allows users to import files to the service in a number of ways, including uploading from a hard drive or simply putting in the URL of a video from YouTube and other popular online video service, along with RSS feeds. Once files are uploaded, they can be converted to all of the usual formats and then downloaded.

Along with this, they will also make available the API to developers so that they can incorporate this in to their products.

Currently this service is invitation based only. If you receive an invitation, only then can you login and encode the videos. Hey!Watch will have a free version, along with a premium version with higher limits on total upload limits, maximum video size and length, etc.

How long does it take for Google Bot to Cache your Page

When I submitted this blog link to Google WebmasterTools, I was so surprised that the page was cached and crawled that day itself. This does not happen all the time. Last time it took me about 2 weeks for another blog.

I think this time I was lucky about submitting it on time when the bots were ready to crawl. Or is it the case that since I am using the new Blogger version?

Anyways, I am sure this won't be the case for getting a pagerank - it might take me months. as I have found out here.
